An update on Sunday night’s structure fire in the R.M. of Cana.
Fire Chief of the Melville Fire Department, Tyrone Mogenson, says they were called out to a house fire around 7:40 p.m., after the resident made the discovery following a day trip to Canora.
“When he arrived on scene, he found that his house had a fire in it – he didn’t realize until he walked in the door, and then worked pretty hard to try and save some of his possessions and [get his] stuff out of the house after he called us, and when we got out there it was fully-involved (engulfed).
“So he contained the fire to the structure of origin, and protected the shop, the garage, and stuff that was there; weather being a pretty serious factor in the fact that it was minus 33 last night, so got to be careful in regards to that sort of stuff.” explained Mogenson.
The resident was not hurt.
Once the fire was extinguished, Mogenson says they were able to determine it started in the basement of the home, but the exact cause of the blaze is unknown.
“Maybe it could have been faulty wiring because of the age of the structure, it could have been maybe a faulty furnace…so a lot of factors could have played into it.
“When you get a total burn like that it’s really hard to absolutely determine what exactly what it was, so it becomes ‘accidental incendiary’ and undetermined.”
