SaskEnergy is sharing tips on staying safe this winter, and at a time when temperatures are bitterly cold.
One is to keep outdoor vent openings free of any frost, ice and snow, as blocked vents can not only cause appliances to malfunction, but also build up carbon monoxide, which can be deadly if left unchecked.
SaskEnergy says low exposure to carbon monoxide can cause flu-like symptoms, but continued exposure can lead to unconsciousness, loss of muscle control, brain damage, or even death. To avoid tragedy, make sure to have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home.
Another is to ensure your gas meter is clear of snow and ice, but SaskEnergy says to be careful when doing so, as hitting the meter with a shovel or kicking it could damage it.
Instead, use a soft-bristle brush or broom, or your hand, and ensure there’s clear path to it for accurate readings and in case of emergency situations.
And the Crown Corporation is encouraging people to schedule an annual inspection of their furnace.
They say annual inspections can save money on your heating bill while keeping the household warm this season. A tune-up can been booked with a qualified SaskEnergy Network Member online at SaskEnergy’s website.
It’s also recommended to change your furnace filter every two months.
