Today through Saturday, GX94 looks back on the top news stories of 2022. In January, the trucker’s convoy heading to Ottawa to protest the federal government’s vaccine mandate for truck drivers, got support on a local level. A local convoy of truck drivers drove from Yorkton to Whitewood to meet up with the “Freedom Convoy”. The protest was over the vaccine mandate that meant truck drivers had to show proof of vaccination to avoid taking COVID-19 tests at the Canada-US border, while unvaccinated American truck drivers were also not allowed to enter Canada. Elsewhere, a rally to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was held in downtown Yorkton in February. Well over 100 people turned out for the rally, many of them Ukrainians, who recently immigrated to Canada. Ukrainian Canadian Congress Yorkton branch President Larissa Van Caeseele was overwhelmed by the show of support. A Yorkton Ukrainian Catholic priest told his parishioners that 30 to 40 villagers near his hometown, laid down in front of Russian tanks, to stop their advance.
