A former police chief who has been working with Ottawa to make First Nation policing an essential service, says the bill to make it happen will soon be drafted. Lennard Busch, executive director of the First Nations Chiefs of Police Association, says the bill, expected to be tabled in the spring, will help First Nations develop their own self-determined police services. Busch says the bill has been years in the making, but it was brought to the front burner because of this year’s mass stabbings on James Smith Cree Nation and nearby village of Weldon.
