10-year-old USask Initiative focusing on homelessness and social justice

Research at the University of Saskatchewan which focuses on homelessness and social justice – that’s what the initiative Pathways to Equity is about.

The working group includes USask faculty members, representatives from community organizations and those with lived experience.

Co–chair, Dr. Brenda Mishak says this initiative has been around for about ten years.

Right now, Pathways to Equity has three projects on the go.

They are identifying barriers that renters might face when trying to access legal resources to fight for their housing rights, addressing rural and northern homelessness through a partnership with Metis Nation-Saskatchewan, and improving income and housing security for residents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Dr. Mishak believes the types of research being done has changed over the years.

She says there is less research for research sake and more work towards finding solutions for challenges in today’s world.
