The Manitoba government says most winter roads to northern communities are open.
The winter road system is important for the North, as it serves over 30-thousand Manitobans in 22 communities and carries over 25-hundred shipments of goods annually.
Nearly half of the shipments are fuel, while the rest include construction materials, heavy equipment, and store supplies.
The province says in a news release construction and maintenance of these roads provides employment and training opportunities for more than 250 local residents.
Working with the federal government’s 50/50 cost share agreement, the provincial government also says it invested $9-million, to provide 22 Manitoba communities with better access to supplies and essential goods.
The winter road network is typically open from mid-January to mid-March, depending on weather conditions.
