Yorkton City Council has approved the rezoning of a 1.3-acre portion of land near downtown, for commercial development.
The piece of land, between Seventh Avenue North and Dracup Avenue, had been zoned for mixed density residential use, but has now been rezoned for city centre commercial use.
There had been no development of any kind on that property since 2003, and Mayor Mitch Hippsley hopes by removing the residential designation, interested developers can look at the total site, which now provides over 11 acres for development.
There is currently no parcel of land of that size available in the city centre for commercial use, but Hippsley notes its proximity to the downtown core as a major advantage to potential developers.
