Manitoba RCMP Pause Investigation of Potential Graves at Pine Creek First Nation

The Pine Creek First Nation in western Manitoba will continue to investigate potential graves at the site of a former residential school.

The First Nation approached police last summer after a private contractor detected 6 reflections beneath a church using ground-penetrating radar, after survivors spoke of abuses that occurred in the basement.

After a year of interviewing community members, conducting surveys, and following up on leads, the RCMP has not uncovered evidence at this time related to criminal activity specific to the reflections detected at the site.

However, a community-led forensic anthropological dig in the basement of the church is taking place.
