Two Ontario residents have been charged, after the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and RCMP made a major bust earlier this month, recovering millions of illegal cigarettes.
On March 1st, authorities stopped a commercial semi-unit on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Indian Head, and a subsequent search resulted in the discovery of 22 pallets, loaded with 6.6 million unstamped cigarettes, worth an estimated street value of 3.3 million dollars.
The semi-unit and its contents were seized, and the driver and passenger were arrested, charged with numerous offences under the Excise Act and Tobacco Tax Act.
The driver was released, to appear in Indian Head in June, while the passenger, who was also found to have breached a Conditional Sentence Order, remains in custody, to appear in Regina Provincial Court.
