I have watched so many movies of Maggie Smith’s throughout my life. My mom loved British movies and tv shows, and LOVED Maggie Smith’s acting. So seeing the news alert on my phone this morning that she had passed away, it definitely made me sad.

Maggie Smith, a luminary of stage and screen, leaves behind a remarkable legacy that spans over seven decades. Her illustrious career began in the theatre, where she captivated audiences with her dynamic performances in productions like The Importance of Being Earnest and A Delicate Balance, earning accolades and establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with. Transitioning seamlessly to film, Smith’s versatility shone brightly. She garnered critical acclaim and two Academy Awards for her roles in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and California Suite.

Her ability to embody diverse characters, from the fierce Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series to the endearing Muriel Donnelly in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, showcased her extraordinary range and depth. Her portrayal of Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey, remains one of her most iconic roles. With her sharp wit, impeccable timing, and undeniable presence, Smith brought a unique charisma to the character, making her an integral part of the show’s success.

I think Lady Grantham was my favourite character Smith she ever played. I could watch Downton Abbey again and again! What a life and legacy she has left! -Tonya Cherry-
