The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has completed the investigation of a police incident in Birdtail Sioux First Nation that resulted in an injury.
On Nov. 22, 2023, Manitoba First Nations Police Service officers responded to a disturbance call and encountered an aggressive male. A use-of-force incident followed, leading to the man sustaining facial injuries and requiring treatment at Virden Health Centre.
The IIU, which investigates serious incidents involving police, reviewed the evidence and interviewed officers, the affected person, and a civilian witness.
The civilian director determined the officer’s actions were reasonable, and no charges were recommended. With this conclusion, the case is now closed.
