Yorkton Council is moving toward amending the city’s Zoning Bylaw to allow for child care centres in residential zoning districts.
City Planner Carleen Koroluk told Council the changes were being proposed because of a community need.
She says a recent inquiry regarding the conversion of an unoccupied residential dwelling to a day care centre to offer more child care spaces in the city, prompted a review of Zoning Bylaw provisions for child care facilities.
Last month, Koroluk says the review was brought to the Planning and Infrastructure Commission, which acknowledged the need for, and lack of, child care spaces in the city, and was supportive of Administration proceeding with zoning amendments that would allow for additional opportunities.
A background report circulated to Council noted that the province’s website currently lists six licenced day care centres and 11 child care homes in Yorkton, along with two additional unlicenced child care providers, adding that they believe there are other child care providers the city is unaware of.
The amendment was given unanimous first reading support at Monday’sregular meeting of Council, and it now proceeds to the Public Notice process.
