Hey friends! If you’re anything like me, watching a musical isn’t something you just jump into, it’s more like something that requires the right mood and headspace. I’ve had my fair share of surprises with “secret musicals” that left me feeling tricked and swindled (Into the Woods, I’m looking at you). But recently, I actually wanted to sit down and watch a musical I had never seen, so I did!
I decided to watch Wonka, the prequel musical starring Timothée Chalamet, and let me tell you, it was quite the watch! Growing up with both Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I was thrilled to see how they expanded this magical universe.
With Hugh Grant taking a turn as an Oompa Loompa and a cast that had me saying, “Hey, I know that actor!” every few minutes, the film was a great experience from start to finish. The acting and singing were top-notch, and yes, the ending had me reaching for tissues.
While I might not watch it on repeat, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves the whimsical world of Willy Wonka. It’s a fun, fresh take with plenty of nods to the original classic from the 70s that’ll make you smile.
So, if you’re ready to step into a world of pure imagination with a modern twist, grab some popcorn and enjoy Wonka!
