A majority of the Town of Esterhazy’s 11 permanent staff represented by CUPE 5428 have voted over 80 per cent in favour of job action to support contract demands.
In a release, the union said over 80 per cent of the employees voted in favour of job action, which could lead to a full withdrawal of services, as the union says the town is trying to force a vote on a contract offer that would shift seniority and remove members from the bargaining unit.
The union says the most recent contract between the town and workers expired in 2023, adding that that the town recently cut staffing, including a position in the town office and the town’s heavy equipment operator and local union president.
The union is not currently in a legal strike position, and they hope a deal can be reached with a return to the bargaining table.
