They say “the days are long, but the years are short,” and as a parent, I can confirm—every cliché about parenthood is absolutely true. One minute, you’re soothing a newborn in the quiet hours of the night, counting down the minutes until sunrise, and the next, you blink and your baby is five years old. I mean, it feels like just yesterday I was birthing my son on the bathroom floor (IFYKYK)—and now I’m packing his lunch and marveling at how much he’s grown.
Because this is his last full year in daycare, I had the brilliant idea to invite the entire class. Originally I wanted his birthday party in our backyard. I had visions of an Instagram worthy party with bouncy castles, a little pool, stations of activities all over the place, and the backyard decorated with balloons and party favors. Kind of like the ones you see in the movies! HA! Good thing I didn’t try to do that.
Instead we went to Dreamland in Yorkton and it was PERFECT! A huge room full of bouncy castles and games that I don’t have to worry about setting up, and then a little room to decorate for the cake cutting and food eating.
It’s wild how quickly time passes, even though some days seem endless. Those toddler tantrums, the sleepless nights, the never-ending laundry—they feel like they will last forever. But here I am, looking at my baby, who so soon won’t have those pudgy cheeks anymore that you just want to eat up, and he’ll look like a big kid! I’m wondering where the time went. Every seasoned parent warns you to cherish the little moments, and they’re right. The snuggles, the giggles, the sticky kisses—they’re gone in a flash. So yes, all the things people say are true. Parenthood is a whirlwind of exhaustion and joy!
