Let’s set the stage. It’s 2004, I’m sitting in a big comfy chair in my sister’s basement, with my 4 year old nephews cuddled up on my lap. And Raffi is playing on the TV. Specifically THIS show.
Fast forward to 2019, my husband and I are driving to visit family and we need something to entertain our 2 year old with, when I stumble upon the very same show on Youtube. Bringing an artist or activity back into your life that you haven’t enjoyed for over a decade, overwhelms you with such a sense of nostalgia.
And now, that guy, the same guy, is coming to Regina! Of course I’ve bought my tickets!
For generations, Raffi has been a beloved figure in children’s music, enchanting families with his gentle voice and memorable songs. Born Raffi Cavoukian in Egypt and raised in Canada, he launched his music career in the 1970s, noticing the need for quality children’s songs.
His debut album, “Singable Songs for the Very Young” (1976), quickly became a family favorite. Raffi’s catchy tunes like “Baby Beluga,” “Down by the Bay,” and “Bananaphone” are now classics, sparking countless singalongs and smiles. “Baby Beluga,” especially, has become an anthem for young children, celebrating playfulness and compassion. His music stands out for its positive messages about kindness, respect, and caring for the environment.
Beyond his music, Raffi is a passionate advocate for children’s wellbeing. He introduced the concept of “Child Honouring” and established the Raffi Foundation to promote a world that cherishes and protects kids. He also champions causes like environmental awareness and safe digital spaces for children. Decades into his career, Raffi’s songs, concerts, and books continue to inspire new generations. His uplifting lyrics and dedication to children make him a true icon, spreading joy and the timeless magic of childhood.
So the Cherry family has a date night coming up in October, and the 5 year old and 7 year old are rather excited. Almost as excited as their mom! -Tonya Cherry-
