REGINA–The official word from the Canadian Football league came almost four hours after scheduled kick off.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders game against the Calgary Stampeders will have to be postponed until Saturday afternoon. Kick off is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
It was the worst news for the fans who stayed in Mosaic Stadium in the hopes the smoke would clear enough for the game to played.
Earlier Friday, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued an air quality warning for Regina, warning of smoke from wildfires causing a serious problem for air quality.
In a social media post, the Saskatchewan Roughriders noted how they were “blown away” by the support from the fans, and are quick to point out all tickets for Friday’s game, will be honoured for Saturday afternoon.
The concern from the CFL and the Roughriders is for player safety. In the air quality advisory, Environment Canada suggests people curtail any rigorous outdoor activities, like sports, because of the fine particles in the smoke.
