Saskatchewan families with children enrolled in sports, cultural or recreational activities will be able to claim a higher refundable tax benefit starting in 2025.
The Active Families Benefit has been doubled to $300 per child, or $400 per child who is eligible for the federal Child Disability Tax Credit. The income threshold for eligibility has also been increased, and families with a gross income of $120,000 or less can now apply for the benefit.
The provincial government says the expansion means more than 69,000 families, or 56 per cent of households with children in Saskatchewan, will be eligible to claim the credit.
Parents are encouraged to keep receipts for sport, culture and recreation programs their children participate in during the 2025 calendar year, as they will need them when filing taxes.
Eligible activities under the Active Families Benefit include organized sporting programs that require strategy, physical training or competition, as well as recreational activities designed to provide entertainment or physical and mental benefits. Cultural programs in areas such as the arts, heritage and multiculturalism also qualify.
The benefit is intended to help families offset the cost of activities provided by local recreation facilities and community organizations across the province.
