Nearly 42,000 pounds of food were collected for the Regina Food Bank during this year’s Purolator Tackle Hunger Game Day Food Drive, held at the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ home game against the Edmonton Elks on July 25.
Volunteers gathered 41,994 pounds of food as fans contributed non-perishable items, made monetary donations and used tap-to-donate technology in support of local food security.
The initiative is part of Purolator’s national Tackle Hunger campaign, which began 22 years ago and has delivered more than 25 million pounds of food to food banks across Canada. The Roughriders have long supported the effort and were recognized last year with the inaugural Chris Schultz Community Impact Award for their commitment to the cause.
“Rider Nation continues to inspire us,” said Lyndon Klymchuk, Unit Manager for Purolator in Regina. “Thanks to strong partnerships with the Roughriders, the CFL and the Regina Food Bank, this grassroots effort has grown into a national movement.”
Craig Reynolds, President and CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, credited fans for the successful campaign. “This year’s Purolator Tackle Hunger Game Day Food Drive was a shining example of community spirit,” Reynolds said. “To see nearly 42,000 pounds of food collected in a single day speaks volumes about the compassion and generosity of our fans.”
Regina Food Bank CEO John Bailey said the support comes at a critical time. “The need in our community continues to rise, so we are beyond grateful that Reginans stepped up once again,” he said.
