As Saskatchewan residents enjoy the height of summer, officials are reminding people that safe driving habits apply to more than just cars and trucks.
JP Cullen, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund, is urging the public to stay sober when operating any type of vehicle — including boats, ATVs, e-scooters and even golf carts.
“Impaired is impaired, and driving is driving. The two don’t mix, no matter what kind of vehicle you’re operating,” Cullen said. “We want people to have a good time this summer, and we also want them to stay safe.”
He adds that the province’s lakes, trails and golf courses make for ideal summer escapes, but mixing substances with vehicle use, whether on land or water, can quickly turn a good day into a tragic one.
Cullen is encouraging people to plan ahead if they’re going to be drinking or using other impairing substances. That could mean choosing a designated driver, calling a taxi or rideshare, asking a sober friend or family member to pick you up, or simply staying the night.
Officials also want the public to know they can report impaired drivers by calling 911.
“It’s about protecting not just yourself, but your loved ones, neighbours and everyone else sharing those roads and trails,” Cullen said.
