Slowly but surely, I’m making my way through my never-ending watchlist, and this week’s pick was Puppy Love. Starring Lucy Hale and Grant Gustin, two actors I always enjoy, it seemed like the perfect recipe for a feel-good movie night. Add in two seriously adorable dogs, and I was ready for some wholesome fun. (Didn’t realize the movie was rated R).
Let’s be real: the dogs totally steal the show. But when it comes to the humans, things are a bit more complicated. Lucy Hale’s character, Nicole, starts off kinda unlikeable, but I think that’s maybe the point. Meanwhile, Grant Gustin’s Max is very much an agoraphobic that you can’t help but feel bad for. Both Nicole and Max are dealing with their own challenges, and when they meet for a doggie date, it’s a disaster. Their personalities just do not mix!
The twist? While Nicole and Max are clashing, their dogs are basically falling in love at first sniff. And in classic rom-com fashion, it turns out Nicole’s dog, Channing Tatum (that’s the dog’s actual name), ends up getting Max’s dog, Chloe, pregnant. Suddenly, these two have to work together for the sake of the puppies, and (you guessed it) start falling for each other.
Overall, Puppy Love is a cute movie with plenty of puppy antics and some sweet moments. But, to be honest, I don’t think I’d watch it again. The chemistry took a while to build, and Nicole made it hard to fully invest in the love story. If you’re a dog lover or just want something light and fluffy, it’s worth a watch. Otherwise, there are plenty more rom-coms (and adorable dogs) out there. On to the next one on my watchlist!
