A new pet adoption centre will soon open its doors in downtown Yorkton after city council gave its unanimous approval during its regular meeting on Monday.
Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle revealed the centre to be Paws and Claws.
Paws and Claws will operate at 12 Fourth Avenue North after its application was approved as a discretionary use under guidelines for a Veterinary Service, Type 1 in the C-1 City Centre Commercial district.
The non-profit’s new location will also offer retail sales of pet food, toys, treats, bowls, beds and blankets.
City land use planner Carleen Koroluk told council the application was initially presented July 14, when public notice was authorized. The proposal was advertised in the local newspaper, at City Hall, on the city’s website and through a mail-out to 30 property owners within 75 metres of the site.
The Planning and Infrastructure Commission reviewed the application on July 30 and fully supported it, noting the stand-alone location, available parking and operating hours made it suitable for the proposed use.
Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle called the decision a “good feel story” for the community.
“Paws and Claws is a great non-profit in our community,” he said. “It was a difficult decision rejecting their first location, but I commend them on the resilience of looking for the next location. They found a great one, and it’s awesome to see them get that approved tonight.”
Kienle added that he is excited to see the new storefront open and add to the community.
