CANORA – The Canora & District Fire Department received a fire call at around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 27.
The fire was in a house at 136 Evelee Avenue, and the back half of the house was fully engulfed in flames when fire department members arrived on-scene, according to Jess Harper, Canora fire chief.
“We got there, got the hoses hooked up, and two firefighters were on the hoses,” said Harper. “We got the fire knocked down, but not before it got into the attic, where there was wood chip insulation.”
“Thankfully, no one was in the house at the time of the fire, so no one was hurt.”
Firefighters were on-scene for about three-and-a-half hours.
“The house is a total loss, but there was no other property damage in the fire.”
Making their jobs even more challenging, firefighters had to deal with temperatures approaching 30˚C.
It was a very hot day, as a result they kept switching firefighters in and out of the fire for breaks.
About 12 firefighters were there to help at various times.
Harper said the suspected cause of the fire is electrical in nature, but an investigator will be brought in to determine the exact cause.
“Thank you to town employees who came out and brought equipment,” said Harper, “a lift to get on the roof, and also a backhoe.”
