MOOSE JAW — Sunningdale School installed a new playground last year and now plans to dedicate it to a former student who taught everyone to smile and enjoy playing despite her own physical limitations.
During its Sept. 2 board meeting, trustees with Prairie South School Division approved a request from Sunningdale’s school community council (SCC) to dedicate the play structure to Maren Bradford, who died in 2022 at age six due to due to an incurable rare genetic disorder called Leigh’s disease.
A letter from the SCC said the school was inspired by Bradford to install a new playground structure since she was an adored student who encouraged everyone to smile through challenges and celebrate the joy of play.
“This playground stands as a tribute to her spirit and a reminder that play should be accessible to every child, regardless of abilities,” the SCC wrote. “Our school is dedicated to providing a safe and enriching environment for ALL of our students to learn and grow.
“As part of our commitment to their well-being, this new addition will not only contribute to the physical development of our students, but also foster a sense of inclusivity and playfulness within our school community,” the letter continued.
The SCC added that it worked hard to provide many hot lunches and host several fundraisers to generate the money to buy the play structure, and with the help of students and families, it made the new playground a reality.
Jenn Prokopetz, superintendent of school operations, told the board that Sunningdale School installed the playground last year in two phases, while the SCC wants to erect a plaque that honours Bradford. However, it’s not yet known when a dedication ceremony will be held.
Lew Young, trustee for Moose Jaw, said he came to know and appreciate “little Maren” during her brief time on Earth and saw the joy she had coming to school, being with friends and teachers, and learning. Moreover, those people made it easier for her parents and family after her death.
Continuing, he said he was pleased, on behalf of all residents connected to the school, to make a motion to allow the SCC to dedicate the playground to Bradford.
“If you have the opportunity to go by and see it, it’s amazing that you see little bits of Maren in that playground,” Young said. “She loved panda bears — and there’s panda bears on there. She loved the colour blue (and shades of that colour are part of the structure).”
Young added that all those features on the playground will help the community remember “little Maren Bradford.”
The next Prairie South board meeting is on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
