The Yorkton Terriers came out on top in the first Highway 10 Rivalry matchup of the preseason, edging the Melville Millionaires 6–5 in a back-and-forth battle Friday night at the CN Community Centre.
Jye Zawatsky and Quinn Tavender each scored twice for the Terriers, including game-changing tallies just 10 seconds apart late in the third period to secure the win.
Melville opened the scoring when Rylan Oatman pounced on a rebound, but Yorkton answered with a flurry — four goals in less than 10 minutes from Zawatsky, Tavender, Mikale Budz, and Vinay Junek. Olson’s late first-period marker kept the Millionaires within striking distance at 4–2.
The second belonged to Melville. Outshooting Yorkton 17–5, the Millionaires clawed back with goals from Wesley Golden, Olson, and Devon Winder to grab a 5–4 lead heading into the final frame.
Yorkton’s power play delivered in the third. Zawatsky buried his second of the night to tie it, and moments later Tavender redirected a perfect Budz feed for the eventual game-winner.
Terriers goaltender Alexandro Montoya was tested often, turning aside 48 of 53 shots for his second preseason victory.
The two teams wrap up their exhibition schedules Saturday night at Westland Arena. Puck drop is 7:00 PM.
