Melville Fire and Rescue has officially been designated an offensive fire department under Saskatchewan Public Safety standards, marking a significant milestone in the city’s emergency response capabilities.
This designation means Melville’s firefighters will be able to carry out more safety measure including entering burning structures to carry out interior fire suppression and rescue operations—an advanced level of service that demands rigorous training, specialized equipment, and operational readiness.
Fire Chief Aaron Buckingham emphasizes that this upgrade reflects the department’s dedication to public safety and its expanding role in regional emergency response.
“This status allows us to respond more effectively to structure fires and protect lives and property with greater confidence,” Buckingham said.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency oversees training and certification for fire services across the province. Achieving offensive status requires departments to meet strict standards in areas such as protective gear, breathing apparatus, incident command systems, and firefighter fitness.
Melville’s volunteer-based department has seen a rise in call volume in 2025, responding to vehicle fires, hazardous materials incidents, air ambulance landings, and public education events.
With this designation, Melville Fire and Rescue joins a growing number of Saskatchewan communities raising fire protection standards to better serve residents and neighboring areas.
