SaskEnergy is rolling out a new program aimed at helping low-income homeowners cut down on heating costs.
The Crown corporation has launched the Heating Affordability Program (HAP), which will provide eligible income-qualified households with a free high-efficiency furnace to replace outdated low-efficiency models.
Mark Guillet, SaskEnergy’s president and CEO, said the initiative is designed to ease financial pressure while improving energy use.
“At SaskEnergy, we are committed to helping our customers’ energy dollars go further,” Guillet said. “HAP is a program that helps customers save money and improve energy efficiency while they keep their homes warm during the colder months.”
The goal is to replace furnaces for up to 50 households ahead of the heating season. SaskEnergy estimates participating customers could save as much as $650 annually on natural gas and electricity costs.
To qualify, homeowners must already be enrolled in SaskPower’s Energy Assistance Program and meet income and equipment requirements. Eligible participants will be contacted directly.
SaskEnergy Network Members will handle the new installations and include a 96 per cent annual fuel utilization efficiency single-stage natural gas furnace, venting modifications, three furnace filters, and, if necessary, a programmable thermostat.
HAP replaces the corporation’s previous Tune-Up Assistance Program, which offered furnace maintenance support.
SaskEnergy says customers can still access furnace maintenance through the SaskEnergy Network Home Heating Tune-Up, with optional on-bill financing available.
