There’s just something special about being back in the rink for game night! Even though we’ve been back in rinks since July, last night was extra exciting—it was the first official game of the year. My son is working hard to earn his spot on the U15 AA SaskEast Oilers Team, and last night they hit the ice for a pre-season match-up against Prairie Storm in Melville.
The energy in the arena was contagious, and I couldn’t be prouder of all the kids out there giving it their all. The “good guys” came out on top with a 7-2 win, but honestly, the real win was seeing so much incredible talent on display from both teams. Our area is packed with young athletes who never fail to impress, and every single one of them should be proud—whether they make the final roster or not. It’s tough knowing there are only so many spots available, and as the coaches prepare to make those difficult decisions and cut down the roster later this week, I just want to say: keep your heads high, keep chasing your dreams, and remember that every experience on the ice makes you stronger.
On a personal note, it was a blast to get back in the public address booth last night! Announcing the game and supporting these young athletes—there’s nothing quite like it. I’ve always said being a full-time public address announcer for a professional team would be a dream come true.
To all the kids out there chasing roster spots this season—good luck! Your dedication and passion are inspiring, and I can’t wait to watch you all grow and succeed, no matter where you play. Maybe we’ll bump into each other at a rink this winter. Until then, keep skating, keep dreaming, and enjoy every moment on the ice!
