WEYBURN – Aspiring artists in the Weyburn area have an opportunity to receive financial support for their creative ambitions. The Millie Coghill Fine Arts Award is being offered through the Weyburn Art Gallery.
Funded by Ian Coghill in memory of his grandmother, the award is open to any Weyburn and area adults pursuing post-secondary education, internships, immersive workshops, etc., in a creative field (i.e. graphic arts, architecture, interior design, photography, visual arts, music, etc.). It is also available to graduating high school students who will be pursuing post-secondary education in a creative field.
Millie Coghill, a beloved figure in Weyburn’s art community, was known for her prolific painting career spanning from the mid-1960s to 2005. Her work was showcased in numerous local and provincial galleries and earned her multiple “James Weir People’s Choice” awards.
Today, her art graces homes across Canada and Europe, and is featured in the Saskatchewan Legislature and the City of Weyburn’s Permanent Art Collection.
Beyond painting, Coghill contributed to the creation of the Weyburn Wheel, now housed in the Weyburn Public Library, as well as quilting, which she mastered and won a provincial award for in 1984.
