CANORA – The Canora Air Cadets squadron is started the new season with an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. to be held at Canora Composite School gym. Captain Darren Paul, commanding officer, says everyone is welcome to attend.
“We will have a few stations set up to showcase what cadets do during the year, and refreshments will be provided.”
Last year included numerous highlights for the Canora squad.
“We had survival training with two other squadrons at Camp Saskadet in Kelvington,” said Captain Paul.
Local activities included building rockets and learning the forces involved on getting the rockets to launch.
“We held first aid training, as well as an orienteering /snowshoe day at the Canora golf course activity centre.
“Our weekly training included drill and deportment, which teaches pride in uniform and attention to detail. We also focused on citizenship, sportsmanship, and aviation related classes, including meteorology, aircraft recognition, forces that act on an aircraft, and so on.”
Cades were instructed in leadership and instructional techniques, equipping them to go on and teach other cadets.
Young people from the ages of 12 to 18 years old are welcome to join the cadets.
“Youth will experience opportunities that they will not get anywhere else in Canada at no cost. Uniforms and training are free,” concluded Captain Paul.
