PREECEVILLE — As the leaves change colour and the air turns crisp, Preeceville mayor Darin Newton is encouraging residents to embrace the season with community events and activities.
“Autumn has kicked summer to the curb,” Newton said. “I see leaves changing colour and falling to the ground, but the weather seems to be holding on. Hopefully, by the time this is printed, most farmers have harvest.”
Fall supper season is underway in the area, and Newton said he will keep residents informed. Highlights include:
-
Norquay Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church supper — Oct. 5, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Norquay Communiplex Hall.
-
Trinity United Church ham and perogy supper — Oct. 18, 4:30 to 7 p.m., Preeceville.
-
Buchanan Community Centre supper — Oct. 19, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
-
Endeavour Community Complex supper — Oct. 26, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., doors opening at 4 p.m.
Newton also highlighted the upcoming annual Halloween dance at the hall on Oct. 25, with music by Nightlife Entertainment. “Get started planning those costumes. You can save $5 per ticket by getting them in advance at the town office,” he said. The event is for adults only.
The mayor also noted that Club 60 has resumed events and welcomes everyone. “Fees are only $10 per year,” Newton said. “They host monthly whist tournaments, with the first one on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. Lunch is available for $10. Shuffleboard and cards happen every Wednesday at 1 p.m., and the hall can be rented for meetings or celebrations.”
Newton encouraged residents to enjoy the season outdoors. “Take advantage of this beautiful fall weather, and go for a walk on the scenic Lions Walking Trails by Annie Laurie Lake, hop on that bicycle gathering dust in the garage, try a new sport, or anything else to stay active. There’s always lots to see and do around our area.”
The mayor also pointed out the growing popularity of pickleball. “Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in North America right now, and there is a very active club here. They meet twice a week at the Sturgis School gym — Mondays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. Players range from age 20 to 70, and members come from Preeceville, Sturgis, and surrounding areas. If you’re interested, come out and try it. Don’t be shy,” Newton said.
