YORKTON — Yorkton Mayor Aaron Kienle is traveling to Ottawa this week as part of a delegation of municipal leaders from across Saskatchewan to meet with federal officials about strengthening investment in local infrastructure and community development, as arranged by the Minister of Government Relations Eric Schmalz and the Minister of Advanced Education Ken Cheveldayoff.
The delegation’s goal is to highlight that municipalities across Saskatchewan need more predictable, cost-share funding partnerships with the federal government to address pressing local challenges, from modernizing infrastructure to ensuring that towns and cities of all sizes can continue to grow and serve their residents.
“This trip is about partnership and progress,” said Mayor Kienle. “Local communities know their needs best, but we can’t address them alone. By working hand-in-hand with provincial and federal leaders, we can build a stronger Canada, one where every community has the tools it needs to thrive.”
Throughout the meetings in Ottawa, the Saskatchewan delegation will emphasize that federal support for municipal infrastructure isn’t just about fixing local problems; it’s about strengthening the nation as a whole. Reliable infrastructure and vibrant local economies create jobs, safeguard public health, and keep communities affordable and competitive.
“When the federal government invests in municipalities, it’s investing in the future of the country,” Mayor Kienle added. “We want to ensure towns and cities like Yorkton, along with communities across Saskatchewan and Canada, have the resources to meet today’s challenges and prepare for tomorrow’s opportunities.”
The City of Yorkton recognizes the leadership of Minister Schmalz and Minister Cheveldayoff in coordinating this delegation and providing a platform for Saskatchewan’s municipalities to speak with one voice on the national stage.
“I look forward to sharing what we’ve learned and the progress we’ve made with Yorkton’s residents,” Mayor Kienle said. “Their voices and their needs are what drive this work, and it’s important they know we’re committed to keeping them informed as we pursue solutions together.
