YORKTON – The recently named Popowich Terminal at the Yorkton Regional Airport was officially opened Thursday with brief comments from dignitaries, facility tours and a barbecue.
“I’ve had the privilege of seeing how important the airport is,” offered Yorkton Councillor Greg Litvanyi, who added the new terminal is an asset to the facility.
“It’s great to see what we see here today,” he said “. . . This is about making sure our airport is ready for the future.”
Coun. Stephanie Ortynsky said she recognized the importance of the airport from stories she was told through the years, and that importance remains today.
“This is more than just a terminal. It’s a gateway to our future,” she said. “. . . It’s importance is undeniably significant.”
The airport, and the new terminal in particular helps position the city “for whatever the future may hold,” said Ortynsky.
The new building updated existing amenities, including a pilot lounge, reception desk, and leasable office spaces.
SveinCo Developments Ltd did the construction at a cost of roughly $2 million with Airport Capital Reserves covering approximately $850,000, and the remainder from an internal city loan.
