KPop Demon Hunters. If you haven’t heard about it by now, I’m sure your kids certainly have. It’s a global phenomenon! So even though K-Pop might not be my first musical genre of choice, I decided to give this movie a watch as the premise alone got me hooked. Musical superstars who use their voices to fight off demons both physically and metaphorically? Sign me up! Plus since a lot of the team who made the movie are Canadian, I feel like this counts as supporting Canadian film.
I gotta admit…the movie is quite good! I cried! I was unsure about the animation style at first as they mix smooth with choppy animation, which is a bit tough to concentrate on, but once the action starts you don’t even notice it. The songs are so catchy too, which I guess is kinda the idea. I understand now why almost literally every single song from the movie’s soundtrack ended up in the Billboard Hot 100, with the big single of the movie even topping that chart for about 7 weeks now!
I think the overarching story of the movie is something that a lot people end up having to tackle in their lives as well. Not necessarily fighting demons, but deciding who you want to be. Do you become who you were born to be? Or do you become who you want to be? But what really stood out to me was how relatable the main characters, Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, really are. Usually in movies like this, the main characters are these untouchable bad-asses who are rude and hardened, but that’s not the case at all with these gals. Absolutely they are strong and bad-asses, but they also love feasting on their favourite foods and relaxing on the couch. (COUCH! COUCH! COUCH!) They genuinely care about the people around them and care about their fans too. They’re more than idols…they’re role models.
All in all, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot out of KPop Demon Hunters, but I can whole heartedly say that I was wrong for thinking that. It’s good! Entertaining for the adults and the kids. If they do end up making a sequel (because this has been Netflix’s most successful movie to date and they would be fools to not make another one), I would love for them to explore more about Zoey and Mira. We get a bit of exposition about their lives at the beginning of the movie, but since this one is mostly about Rumi, we still don’t know a whole lot about them by the end. It would be wonderful to know more!
So, if you haven’t already, pop that popcorn, get all the snacks, get comfy on the couch and watch KPop Demon Hunters. It’s fun for the whole family! Stay Golden!
