KAMSACK — Eaglestone Lodge’s third annual fall tea and bake sale at Kamsack was advertised to begin at 2 p.m. on Oct. 5, but at five minutes prior to opening, there remained standing room only in the dining hall and the tables of baked goods were already well picked through.
There were almost no seats left and the dining tables were filled with residents and visitors enjoying their tea, coffee and slices of pie, said a member of the Friends of Eaglestone committee, which is the name adopted by the Lodge’s auxiliary.
This is one of only two main fundraising activities held by the Friends of Eaglestone, said Susan Bear, a member of the committee. The other event is held on Mother’s Day in May.
All the baking displayed for sale was donated by committee members and volunteers, who are often members of the families of residents, Bear explained.

Money raised at the tea and bake sale goes for residents’ comfort and entertainment, she said, explaining that funds are used in a project in which photos are taken of residents, money is sometimes provided towards acquiring entertainers and it is used to help pay for the handibus taken for residents’ special outings.
“We also help stock the residents’ ‘tuck shop,’” she said, explaining that the “tuck shop” is like a store in which residents, who have won “play money” at various activities, may “spend” that money purchasing sweets and treats at the “tuck shop.”
Bear estimates that there remain only about five core members of the Friends of Eaglestone, who are assisted by volunteers to host the tea and bake sale, which prompted her to say that “we’re looking for more members” and encouraged persons interested to come forward.
