CANORA – “In honour of those who served and sacrificed.”
Thanks to the combined efforts of the Canora Composite School History 20 and History 30 classes, taught by Olivia Dereniwsky, on Oct. 2, this message of honour was painted in both Ukrainian and English on the crosswalk near the Canora Town Office to the north across Third Avenue East next to Main Street.
The History 30 group started the day by painted the white strips on the crosswalk, and also completed a pair of red maple leafs. The History 20 class then got busy and added the tribute over the white paint.
Dereniwsky said the inspiration for the project came from her grandfather Pat Rawlick, a member of the Yorkton Legion, as well as other Legion members. Rawlick, a 40-year Legion member, regularly speaks to Dereniwsky’s students.
“I wanted to do something special for the Veterans,” said Dereniwsky. “Projects like this really seem to stick with the students. The History 20 class is looking at the World Wars, and the History 30 students are focused on Canadian History, so the Veterans are significant for both.”
While they were doing the painting, she said a number of Canora Legion members and even a few from the Yorkton Legion happened to see them at work, and voiced their support and appreciation for the project.
“A lot of the students at our school have great-grandparents who were in the Second World War,” said Dereniwsky.
She said at least one of the Yorkton visitors mentioned that they would like to see a similar project be initiated in their city.
From now on, anyone approaching the Town Office from the north along Main Street or from the east along Third Avenue will be reminded of the debt we owe to our veterans.
