YORKTON — Aleana Young MLA Regina South Albert, and NDP Shadow Minister for Jobs and Economy, SaskPower was in Yorkton recently with a message that Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has failed the province’s farmers.
Young said there are lots of concern in terms of canola sales given the tariffs imposed by both the United States and China – the two largest markets for the commodity.
“There’s lots of questions around that,” she said.
Moe did head to China to address the trade barrier, but Young said little came out of whatever talks took place, adding the Premier was in China for only two days.
“He came back with nothing to show for it,” she added.
Young said that Moe has even changed his stance now on suggested Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles – it is those tariffs which led to the retaliatory tariffs on canola.
Young said canola producers can’t have such a hardline stance right now.
Something needs to change with Saskatchewan trade to both China and the United States down significantly, said Young, adding there needs to be solutions found.
While in Yorkton Young said health care was also on the minds of who she talked to.
“There’s a lot of frustration,” she said, in particular from those “who work in health care.”
That frustration was largely focused on the lack of details regarding when the city will see the long-discussed new regional hospital, said Young.
“There’s a real sense Yorkton is continuing to be short-changed by this government,” she said.
Young said the need for a new facility is obvious as it serves “a regional hub,” and when touring the hospital one sees “some significant challenges in that facility.”
