After last weekend’s snowfall, I found myself doing what I always do this time of year — dreaming of somewhere warm. Somewhere with turquoise water, soft sand, and no trace of slush or snow shovels. It’s been a long time since we’ve felt the sun like that — our last hot holiday was way back in February 2020.
Every year, we say we’re going to plan a warm getaway. We talk about it, scroll through destination photos, maybe even price a few flights. But then life happens. Work gets busy. The kids’ schedules get more hectic. And the next thing we know, winter is over, and we never made it further than the nearest indoor pool.
This year is already looking the same — a packed work schedule, hockey games every weekend, and not a lot of flexibility. But if I’m honest with myself, we’re running out of reasons not to go.
Our oldest is graduating this year. Life is moving faster than ever. These are the years we’ll look back on, the ones we’ll miss when things slow down. I don’t want another winter to go by filled with “maybe next year” and “we’re just too busy.”
We asked the boys what kind of trip they’d want — and to no surprise, they voted for another cruise. I love that idea too. The ease of it, the sunshine, the way time seems to slow down when you’re out at sea… it just feels right.
Now it’s just a matter of finding the time. And maybe, for once, instead of trying to fit it into our lives, we need to plan our lives around it — just this once.
As I write this, and all I can think about is the Caribbean. The warmth. The sunsets. The salty breeze.
Maybe this is the year we stop dreaming and start booking.
