SASKATOON — Ya'thi Néné Lands and Resources and Fermi Exploration signed an exploration agreement in their continuous pursuit of promoting and enhancing the environmental, social, economic, and cultural well-being of current and future Athabasca residents.
Ya' thi Néné is a non-profit organization owned by the seven Athabasca Basin communities of the Denesułiné First Nations of Hatchet Lake, Black Lake, and Fond du Lac, as well as the Northern Hamlet of Stony Rapids and the Northern Settlements of Uranium City, Wollaston Lake, and Camsell Portage.
The newly signed Exploration Agreement is fundamental to protecting the rights and values of the three First Nations and four municipalities of the Athabasca Basin in Saskatchewan’s far North, and to strengthening their commitment to fostering a sustainable and collaborative relationship in the region.
This accord underscores both YNLR and Fermi’s dedication to enhancing environmental, social, economic, and cultural well-being, both in the present and for the foreseeable future. It is a commitment serving as a foundation for continuous communication between both parties, aligning with YNLR's mandate to support the Athabasca Denesułiné First Nations.
It also reflects Fermi’s environmental, social, and governance commitments, as the agreement encompasses provisions on environmental protection and monitoring, recognition of Etthén Néné Stewardship Areas, training and employment opportunities for Athabasca residents, and contracting preferences for Athabasca businesses.
YLNR Board Chair Mary Denechezhe said the agreement reflects the priorities of their Nations and communities, as prioritizing Athabasca-based businesses through the export database will also assure annual contributions to the Athabasca Community Trust, and a respectful engagement with traditional land use.
“It ensures our people are meaningfully involved in environmental protection, economic opportunities, and decision-making on our lands. By working together respectfully, we are supporting a stronger future for the Athabasca region,” said Denechezhe.
Fermi Technical Director Jack Dann added that their firm understands and shares YNLR's commitment to protecting and monitoring the environment, engages in thoughtful project advancement, and respects local traditions and knowledge.
"This commitment sets the framework for our ongoing engagement with YNLR as we progress in our exploration activities within their territory. It is a respectful way of working together in this territory,” said Dann.
Fermi Exploration is actively advancing uranium exploration projects in and around Saskatchewan’s Athabasca Basin, including the East Hawkrock, Reitenbach, Durrant Lake, Perch River, and Badger Lake properties. The company is focused on sustainable exploration practices that integrate Environmental, Social & Governance principles.
