LINTLAW — Sergeant Horace Harvey of Lintlaw is remembered for his service in the Medical Corps in the Canadian Army. Carol Murray of Lintlaw is his granddaughter.
Horace Alfred Harvey was born on April 2, 1912, in Walcott, England, to Ernest Ward Harvey and Mary Rachel Harvey.
At age 15, he immigrated to Canada with his family, landing in Quebec City aboard the SS Montrose. After a couple of days of rest, they travelled to Kelvington, Sask. The family initially homesteaded north of Nut Mountain, but due to the poor quality of the land and other difficulties, the family was later able to exchange this land for land southwest of Lintlaw.
Horace married Catherine Thomas on May 26, 1933, and raised a family of two daughters, Betty Ann and Olive, and three sons, Henry, John, and David.
On June 6, 1941, Horace joined the Canadian Army in Saskatoon, taking training in the Second Division in Regina and Ottawa. He served in the Medical Corps in the Mediterranean theatre, Sicily, North Africa and Italy, obtaining the rank of sergeant. He was discharged from the 12th Division in Regina on Sept. 5, 1946.
After his discharge, Horace obtained employment as an orderly at the Regina General Hospital, remaining there until his retirement in 1977. In 1993, he moved back to Lintlaw where he remained until his passing on Nov. 12, 2008. Horace was an avid hockey fan and was very involved with the legion in Lintlaw, serving as president for several years. He was particularly proud of his 15 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. He is buried in the Lintlaw Cemetery.
