REGINA – Downtown Regina was Party Central in the province after the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the Grey Cup on Sunday night.
Fans descended onto the "Green Mile" and into the intersection of Albert St. and Victoria Ave. to celebrate the Riders' 25-17 win over the Montreal Alouettes. Delirious fans honked horns and waved Roughriders flags, and broke out into chants of "We're Number One" and sang "We are the champions!"
There was a considerable presence by Regina Police as the Green Mile was cordoned off to allow fans to celebrate. It was mostly a joyous scene but there was one incident where one fan climbed up a pole and had to be coaxed down by police.
It is expected it will continue to be a mob scene at the Albert and Victoria intersection well into the night. It was also a celebratory scene on the streets of Regina with many vehicles honking horns on the roads in celebration.
As celebrations go on at the Green Mile, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have announced plans for the victory celebrations that will happen in Regina on Monday and Tuesday.
The club confirmed Sunday that the team will return home Monday, Nov. 17, with the Championship Parade to happen Tuesday.
Fans will be able to get a "Glimpse of the Cup" Monday at Mosaic Stadium, with the program beginning at 1:30 p.m. and lasting 30 minutes. The Riders are expected to arrive at Regina International Airport prior to that time. The club emphasizes that the Roughriders will not be deplaning through the airport terminal, so the first opportunity that fans will have to greet the team will be at Mosaic Stadium.
On Tuesday is the Official Championship Parade, where the Roughriders will travel down the Green Mile to the steps of the Saskatchewan Legislature. The team will parade down Albert Street starting at 2 p.m. from 13th Ave. to 20th Ave., and will parade in vehicles driven by the Royal Canadian Armed Forces.
Festivities will culminate with a special ceremony at the Legislature around 3 p.m. with speeches from Head Coach Corey Mace and Grey Cup MVP Trevor Harris.
According to the club, parking will not be available in front of the Legislature. Fans joining the team at Legislative grounds will need to park in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
