The City of Melville is moving forward with plans to build a safer route for students and families along Halifax avenue.
City Council has officially approved submitting a full application to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund to support the Halifax street Sidewalk Connector and School Pathway Initiative.
The project would create a continuous pedestrian and cycling path on the south side of Halifax Avenue, connecting Main Street to Prince Edward Street. It’s designed to link neighbourhoods with schools, parks, and community facilities while promoting active transportation and reducing emissions.
The initiative has strong community support, including endorsements from the Melville Youth Council and local schools. The city’s pre-application to the Green Municipal Fund was accepted earlier this fall, clearing the way for the full application.
If approved, federal funding could cover up to 80 percent of the project cost. The city will contribute through project management and cost-sharing, with no new budget impacts expected at this stage.
Administration will now finalize the full application as Melville works toward safer, more connected neighbourhoods.
