YORKTON — An amendment to Yorkton’s Fire Prevention Bylaw pertaining to emergency response fee caps was back before Yorkton Council Monday.
On Oct. 24, Administration brought forward an amendment to the Fire Prevention Bylaw – Emergency Response Fee Caps as requested by Council at the Sept. 22, Council meeting, related Trevor Morrissey, Fire Chief.
“The amended bylaw reflected caps set for cost recovery for emergency charges, at $5,000.00 for residential, $50,000 for commercial, and no cap for industrial, and agricultural,” he said.
At the Oct. 27, meeting the amended bylaw was given two readings and failed to pass third with unanimous consent of Council, and thus is before Council tonight for consideration of third reading, noted Morrissey.
“The full financial impact of this bylaw will be unknown until actual fire events occur. However as per the report of Oct. 27, over the past five years the City would have had the ability to collect approximately $71,000 if the maximum limits had been in place as per this proposed Bylaw amendment, and $97,400 without caps in place,” he said.
Third reading did pass Monday although Councillors Greg Litvanyi and Quinn Haider sat opposed.
