PREECEVILLE — The Preeceville Curling Club is scheduled to open its doors to a new season of curling by the end of November, with excited curlers taking to the ice.
League curling will be held Monday afternoons, Tuesday evenings will feature four-person curling (and possibly Wednesday evenings), and Thursday evenings will feature a 2-2 league.
The bonspiels scheduled for the 2026 season include an open house for everyone from 5 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 5. Whether you've curled before or never curled and would like to try it, come out for an evening of free curling and some fun, stated Lynn Ager.
The Preeceville Roughrider Snowmobile Club is holding its snowmobile draw at the rink on Dec. 19. The curling club will be having a wing night, and the bar will be open.
There is a possibility of hosting a Christmas bonspiel on Dec. 26 and 27. Jan. 12-16, 2026 is the seniors’ bonspiel, and Feb. 2-7, 2026 will feature the open bonspiel.
To sign up for regular curling, please call or text Tim Olson at 814-7386, Ralph Ager at 547-7276 or Joe Yacyshyn at 547-3117.
The executive for the 2025-26 season are Sheldon Luciw as president, Phil Murrin as vice-president, Lynn Ager as treasurer and Brandi Arneson as secretary. Directors are Denise Olson, Jess Olson and Emmit Arneson. Rod Serhan has been hired as the ice maker and caretaker.
The tradition of curling began in 1934 and has faced many challenges over the 85 years, but the passion for curling has remained in Preeceville, according to members.
“You can follow the events and activities on the Preeceville Curling Club online,” said Ager.
The original curling rink was first proposed by Alfred Buck and Jack Long in the summer of 1934, stated information given in the Town of Preeceville history book. The rink opened on Jan. 4, 1935, with fees set at $5 for those who had their own rocks and $8 for those who did not. Doug Bentley and his dray of horses hauled hot water from the creamery in three 45-gallon drums to flood the ice.
Curling enthusiasm was so great that another sheet of ice had to be built in 1937. In 1954, a new rink with three sheets of ice was constructed. Artificial ice was installed in 1977, and through the years, considerable work and renovations were done to improve the rink, according to the history book.
