YORKTON – The Salvation Army in Yorkton officially kicked off its Christmas kettle campaign Friday at the Parkland Mall.
Major Laurie Reilly said the kettles actually date back to 1891, and have been in use in the city since 1913.
The money raised locally goes to a number of projects including toys for children and food hampers at Christmas, and food for the food bank.
While noting that in 2024 the fundraising effort fell short of its goal, Reilly said she is optimistic of hitting this year’s goal of $125,000.
The demand for hampers is certainly there, with Reilly saying they have received “at least 50 more,” taking them well over 300 with time still to apply.
Applications for Christmas hampers do not close until Nov. 27.
In addition to kettle donations in various locations around the city there are other projects set to support fundraising efforts including the upcoming Holiday Train visit Dec.6, with stops in both Bredenbury and Yorkton, and the annual Teddy Bear toss at the Dec. 19, Yorkton Terrier game.
