CANORA – Welcome to Canora’s new transfer station, our latest solution for meeting residents’ waste management needs.
Thanks to everyone who attended the official opening on Nov. 14 and witnessed this little piece of history.
This state-of-the-art facility has been five years in the making.
Council began looking at alternatives to replace the landfill in 2020 when it became apparent that the existing garbage dump was no longer going to meet the environmental standard.
Waste management and the environmental impacts of those services have become a global priority. Offsetting the always-increasing related costs is a huge challenge for council just like it is with many of the other necessities that municipalities provide today.
And the way that waste is managed is changing as well, which is why the Town chose to build a transfer station instead of another landfill.
You may notice slight differences in the level of service compared to the old landfill; but this station will provide residents with those services for many, many years to come.
This facility cost about $2.7 million to design and build, and is one of the first-class facilities in the province today.
Thanks to Tetra Tech Canada Inc. the engineering company who has been with Canora for all of the landfill and transfer station planning over the past few years.
Also a shout out to Contech General Contractors of Saskatoon who carried out the contract to build this modern and functional site that you see today.
If you look over to the east, work on decommissioning the decades-old landfill has begun, and that will signal the end of an era for Canora. But it also demonstrates to residents the Town’s commitment to renewal and future growth with the development of this new transfer station.
In order to make the little improvements, a community must have a good foundation to build on. Overall, the Town’s infrastructure framework is in good shape. Recent work, including the new aquatic facility, upgrades at water treatment plant and now waste management, ensure that foundation remains strong.
