YORKTON — The Good Spirit School Division approved its accountability report on mental health and well-being for students and staff during the Dec. 11 meeting in Yorkton.
Superintendent of schools Amanda Kornaga, wellbeing consultant Michelle Goulden, mental health co-ordinator Twila Seeley, and mental health capacity building promoter Brittany Stringfellow presented the document. The division said the quartet highlighted the division’s systems-level approach to wellbeing, with a focus on creating safe, supportive, and sustainable learning and working environments.
The first update included the introduction of Goulden as the new well-being consultant. This role was introduced for the 2025-26 school year. According to Good Spirit, Goulden will provide leadership and direct support to schools before, during and after critical or traumatic events.
Mental health capacity building also continues to align with the four pillars of GSSD’s strategic plan, the division said. High-quality programming includes the Friends Resilience Program, which has shown strong outcomes for students. Engagement initiatives featured family events and staff wellness activities that encourage connection and participation.
Health-focused supports included student mental health groups and exam-time support at the Yorkton Regional High School, the division said. Effectiveness was addressed through the review of discipline practices and administrative procedures using a trauma integrated practices lens.
The division added the team also shared their vision for continued growth, including expanded supports for GSSD and Following Their Voices schools, increased mental health literacy for staff, and improved access to mental health resources for students, staff and families.
A report for the meeting stated trustees expressed appreciation for the thoughtful, inclusive approach, noting the balance between supporting students’ well-being while continuing to build important life skills and ensuring students are supported rather than excluded.
