CANORA – World Ice Skating Day has been held each year since 2022. On Dec. 14 Canora got into the action with an on-ice event hosted by the Canora Skating Club.
As WISD President Jae Youl Kim put it, “This day is dedicated to rejoicing the sheer delight of ice skating.” (worldiceskatingday.com/who-we-are)
The day began in Canora with a free community skate. Rebecca Trost, Canora Skating Club Coach, along with program assistants, was on the ice providing assistance and encouragement for the younger skaters who are still a little unsure of themselves on the ice.
We had a great turn out of participants and spectators,” said Trost. “The Canora Skating Club board members showed up in full force once again to help make the event extra special.”
The highlight of the day was performances by six local StarSkaters.
“The StarSkate simulations were a very important first run for our skaters,” said Trost, “giving them key points to focus on during our next practices leading up to competitions.”
The performers who are preparing for competitions coming up in the New Year are: Ashton Lamb, Emily Mentanko, Chloee Abbott, Keira Owchar, Harper Chernoff and Olivia Owchar.
Important events coming up for StarSkaters are:
- STAR/Black Boots seminar in Balgonie on Jan. 10, 2026. This is a developmental day camp hosted by Skate Saskatchewan.
