CANORA -For 20 Grade 8 students from Canora Composite School, Dec. 10 was a special day to try something that was new to most of them. They spent most of the day at the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre getting an introduction to curling. Most had never curled before.
Dave Baron, organizer, said the purpose of the workshop was to “get more kids curling,” adding that similar workshops have been conducted in Yorkton. “It’s about making curling sustainable in the future.”
Consensus among the students seemed to be, “It’s fun to learn something new.”
The workshop was led by CURLSASK Instructor Steve Farquarson.
The young curlers learned about the basics of the game in the morning; where instruction including shooting, sweeping, how to score points and so on.
Helping out with instructing the students were CCS Teacher Curtis Baillie, and Canora Curling Club President Terry Wilson.
“Our aim is to hopefully develop a love for the game in these young students,” said Dave Baron.
“A few may become elite curlers but hopefully most of them continue curling for life, even if it’s just for fun.”
