YORKTON — Inclusive education student services consultants Jackie Spencer, Cindy van Eeden and Val Ruf provided an overview of how the Good Spirit School Division’s (GSSD) supports learners during the Dec. 11 board meeting in Yorkton.
According to a report from the meeting, the presentation defined inclusive education as ensuring every student receives fair, high-quality learning opportunities tailored to their strengths, abilities and needs.
“Classroom teachers play a central role through culturally responsive instruction, flexible teaching practices and strong collaboration with caregivers and school teams,” the meeting report stated.
Inclusive teams, with teachers, administrators, specialists and community partners, work together to ensure student needs remain at the forefront, the report said. The board also learned about GSSD’s system-wide supports, including sensory and motor spaces, assistive technology, social groups, the swim program and transition-to-employment programming.
Each year, the division said staff members complete hundreds of documents, such as records of adaptations, as well as plans for inclusion and intervention, medical response and response to intervention.
The division said the presentation reinforced GSSD’s philosophy that inclusion is a guiding principle rooted in belonging, strengths-based thinking and proactive planning, reflecting the division’s ongoing commitment to creating learning environments where all students can thrive.
